Everything is moving at a record pace this year, we are much futher along with the gardens than we were last year. We are also busier than ever! We have increased the vegetable and herb gardens to nearly double what we had last year. We planted mature grape vines we got free from craigslist (free other than our labor to dig them up) and they are doing great! We are also redoing and expanding the flower beds to move more herbs into them. We have a peach tree and blueberry bushes to get in this holiday weekend.
The rabbitry is doing great! It is starting to pay for itself, while providing us with home grown protein. We are beside ourself with excitement about our new American rabbits we will be picking up next weekend. American rabbits are a heritage breed that is listed as critical on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. We absolutely love raising rabbits, so getting to part of the movement to protect and promote this historic breed is an honor! The above picture, is of our soon to be new American blue doe from Bunny Hill Farms in Wisconsin.
Some of our other goal this summer include a stand at the farmers market, a double chamber earth oven, and hopefully a new shed. I believe the farmers market will be a get our feet wet year. We have ideas of products we want to try, but we'll let the market move us in the direction that will bring us the most success. With the help of Rebecca's parents, who went to workshops on how to build earth ovens, I believe it will be a lot of fun constructing ours. I can't wait to eat the first loaf of bread we bake in it :-) We really wanted to build a cordwood shed this year, but we just need a shed like now, so maybe next year we'll try and do a cordwood shed. This is only a few goals, there are many more we would like to try.
I have so much more I could talk about, but that seems like its enough for my exciting first blog. I will do my best to keep these blogs going and I'll even try to make the less boring as I go along
