Creating a better way of life for our family
Welcome to Candleberry Cottage.
Here at Candleberry Cottage we are creating a REAL cottage garden. One that will provide an abundance of fresh organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, and meat for our family. We also are starting small cottage business ventures to help create true self sufficiency for our family. In the process we hope to create a better way of life for our family.
So what do I mean by REAL cottage gardening? Well the term cottage gardening usually evokes visions of English cottages surrounded by tons of flowers like, climbing roses, hollyhocks, foxglove, etc. However historically cottage gardening was really more like what today we call a urban homestead. Medieval working class people had small amounts of land to provide food for their family, so they learned how to use every bit of it. Flowers and herbs were grown to make medicines, flavor foods, dye fabrics, and for odor control. Vegetable plots, fruit trees, chickens, bee hives, and possibly even a pig tucked away in the corner of the yard, provided most if not all of the food the family would eat. We believe cottage gardening offers a time tested and charming blueprint for our goals and lifestyle. That being said we totally embrace the urban/backyard homesteading movement and ideas. We hope to encourage others to become cottage gardeners, urban/backyard homesteaders, urban farmers, whatever blueprint that allows you grow and raise organic food for your family.
We believe that Candleberry Cottage is creating a holistic lifestyle that will truly enrich our family. We only starting making changes to our life and home a few years ago, by what we often refer to as our baby steps, but these small changes have already made so many positive results.
